The most popular table games in South Africa

Before gaming machines were invented in the 19th century, table games were pretty much the only games of chance available at casinos. These involved cards, dice, balls, and wheels, and were played on felt-covered tables against the house. Needless to say, these table games are very much around today. You can try them if you visit one of South Africa’s top-notch land-based casinos like Montecasino or Sun City, or you can give them a go online. Which one should you try? It’s up to you. Here are five of South Africa’s most popular table games that will probably pique your interest.

5. Dragon Tiger: The Simplest of Table Games

A simple guessing game made popular by live casinos, Dragon Tiger is a simple guessing game. It is played at a table with 8 decks of cards, with fields for Dragon, Tiger, and Tie. The goal is simple: correctly guess which one of the two options - Dragon or Tiger - will be higher. You can also bet on a tie between the two.

Here’s how a game of Dragon Tiger is played:

  • You place your bet on the option that you like
  • The dealer deals one card for the Dragon and one for the Tiger
  • The cards are compared

Depending on the table rules, the payouts for your successful bets can differ, but they are something like this:

  • Betting on Dragon or Tiger pays even money (1 to 1)
  • Ties pay anywhere between 8 to 1 and 11 to 1, depending on the game provider
  • If you bet on Dragon or Tiger and there’s a tie, half of your bet is returned to you.

There are special winning conditions and side bets, too - once again, their availability depends on the individual game:

  • Dragon or Tiger Big (over 7)
  • Dragon or Tiger Small (under 7)
  • Dragon and Tiger suited (the two cards are of the same suit)
  • Tie and suited - bonus payout

4. Roulette: The Granddaddy of Table Games

Roulette is the most iconic casino game. Every casino in the world, online or otherwise, has at least some form of roulette in its offer, either an RNG-powered game or a live casino table. It’s an exciting game with a variety of betting options that we covered in detail on our roulette page

Roulette is a fun game to play and is available in many forms, from RNG games to auto-play live wheels and elaborate multi-wheel variants with side bets and progressive jackpots.

3. Blackjack: Strategy Meets Table Games

Roulette is a strategy-driven casino game that also happens to be a ton of fun to play.

2. Baccarat: As Fast As A Slot Machine

A simple game with basic rules and quick gameplay - this is what you get when you play baccarat. We’ve gone into detail about the game on our baccarat page. There are many variants available, most of them with the same basic rules but variations on the speed (Speed Baccarat vs Baccarat Squeeze) and theme - there are even sports-themed Baccarat games available.

1. Poker (The Casino Kind)

While poker is not exactly a casino game, it does have its place in casinos, even the online kind. And we’re not talking about Texas Hold’em or Draw played by players against each other - we’re talking of the casino poker variants you can play online, even with live dealers.

Casino poker games are a fun take on classic poker with much faster gameplay, fewer betting options, and more reliant on luck. They look and feel familiar but they adapt perfectly to the casino environment. Find out everything you need to know about them on our poker page.

These are the most popular table games South African players like. Which one is your favourite? Are you into the strategic depths of blackjack or the fast-paced and luck-driven gameplay of baccarat?
